All of we know what is light? Light is a form of energy,which gives us sensation to look anything clearly,without light in our life we cann't imagine a second.Today I will discuss on a small niche of light and that is what is the index of refraction of water.

What is reflection?
Answer:-Light ray which is travelling from a source through a medium (say air) in a straight line if it is obstructed by another medium or a surface then it bounce back from that medium or surface to the its 1st medium, this property of light is called reflection of light.

What is refraction?
Answer:- Light ray which is coming from a source through a medium in a straight line when it enters in another medium,then it slightly change the direction of its path on the contact point of two medium, this property of light is called refraction of light.

OB = Refracted ray
CD = Normal
O = Point of contact
<i = Angle of incidence
<r = Angle of Refraction

what is refractive index or index of refraction of light?
Answer:- According to the second law or Snell's law of refraction, the ratio of the sin of angle of incidence to the sin of angle of refraction is always a constant, which is termed as the refractive index or index of refraction of second medium with respect to first medium.
In another way refractive index or index of refraction can be explained as, the ratio of the velocity of light in first medium to the velocity of light in second medium is also a constant,which is know as the refractive index or index of refraction of second medium with respect to first medium.
Mathematically,
Refractive index can be expressed as.

Answer:-The index of refraction of water
can be defined as, the ratio of velocity of light in air to the velocity of light in water.
Mathematically, it can be expressed as,

and Vw = Velocity of light in water

Question(1)
If the velocity of light in air is 3 × 10⁸ m/s and refractive index of water is 1.33 then find the velocity of light in water.
Answer:-
Here,
Velocity of light in air(Vₐ) = 3 × 10⁸ m/s
R.I of water(aμw) = 1.33
∴ Velocity of light in water(Vw) = Vₐ /aμw
= 3 × 10⁸ / 1.33
= 300 ×10⁸ /133
= 2.225 ×10⁸ m/s

If the velocity of light in air is 3 × 10⁸ m/s, velocity of light in water is 2.225 ×10⁸ m/s, find refractive index of water.
Answer:-
Here,
Velocity of light in air(Vₐ) = 3 × 10⁸ m/s
Velocity of light in water(Vw) = 2.225 ×10⁸ m/s
∴ refractive index of water.
= a = Vₐ / Vw = 3 × 10⁸ /2.225 ×10⁸
μ = 1.34 (approx.)

If velocity of light in water is 2.225 ×10⁸ m/s, refractive index of water is 1.33 then find the velocity of light in air.
Answer:-
Here,
Velocity of light in water(Vw) = 2.225 ×10⁸ m/s
refractive index of water (aμw) = 1.33
∴ velocity of light in air ( Vₐ) = Vw × aμw
= 2.225 ×10⁸ × 1.33
= 2.95925 ×10⁸
= 3 ×10⁸ m/s (approx.)
