Summary:-

Today in this article I will discuss on the topic difference between mass and weight which is very important for school going children. To start the discussion I want to explain you first,

    What is mass?

Answer:- The sum of all rigid particles present in a body or a matter is termed as mass of that perticular body or that matter.
To describe completely mass of a body we don't need to explain any direction of mass as, it has no direction ,mass has measurable numerical value, so it is also known as a scaler quantity.Mass of a body always remains constant i.e; it is an unchangeable quantity.

    Difference between mass and weight

**What are the units of mass?

    Answer:-

The units of mass in different systems are as follows:-
    (i) In C.G.S system the unit of mass is gram.
(ii) In M.K.S or S.I system the unit of mass is :- Kg or Kilogram which is also called standard unit of mass, and lastly
(iv)In F.P.S system the unit of mass is pound.
    Now iI will explain,

What is weight? to explain it before let us know

**What is acceleration due to gravity?

    Answer:-

The force of attraction of earth towards its center which works on every falling body is called acceleration due to gravity or earth gravity.

**What is weight of a body?

Answer:-  We know, earth gravity executes on each falling body, the amount of force of earth gravity which works on every body towards the direction of its center is called weight of that perticular body.Weight has a definite direction which is towards earth's center, so it is a vector quantity.Weight of a body is changeable from one place to another.

**How can we explain weight mathematically?

Answer:- Mathematically weight can be explained as:-

           W = m× g
    where,
W = weight of the body.

g = Acceleration due to gravity.

and, m= mass of the body.

** What is the unit of weight?

Answer:- ∵ Weight of a body is defined as:-
           W = m× g
= Kg × m/s² [putting units of mass and acceleration due to gravity.]
              = Newton
So, the unit of weight is newton.

    ** What are 'g' and 'G'?

Answer:- 'g' is called acceleration due to gravity or earth's gravity and its value is 9.81m/s²,on the other hand 'G' is called gravitational constant and its value is 6.674×10⁻¹¹×m³kg⁻¹s⁻²

    **Difference between mass and weight.

Answer:- The differences between mass and weight are as follows:-

    Difference between mass and weight

    i) The summation of all rigid particles present in a body is called its mass whereas, the force of earth gravity which influences on a body is called its weight.

(ii) Mass is a scaler quantity, where as weight is a vector quantity.

(iii)  Mass of a body is measured using common balance, whereas weight of a body is measured using spring balance.
(iv) Mass of a body is always constant i.e; mass can not be changed where weight is changeable depending from place to place.

*** Some problems related on mass and weight:-

    (1) Find the weight of a body whose mass is 2500gm.

    Answer:- Mass of the body(m) = 2500g

            = 2500/1000kg [ ∵ 1000g =1kg]

    =2.5kg
Acceleration due to gravity(g) =10m/s²[let,us taken]
    ∴ Weight of the body(W) = mg
                                          =  (2.5× 10)
                                           = 25 N

    (2) If the weight of a bag is 500N, Find it's mass.

    (v).What is the mass formula?

    +

Answer:From Newton’s second law of motion we find, F = ma,

    where F = Applied force

m = mass of the body, and

a = Acceleration of the body.

    so,m = F/ a which is called mass formula.
